Tips that could help you save energy this winter

The EFL Trust, along with Club Community Organisations across England and Wales, have teamed up with Smart Energy GB to makes sure that the communities we serve understand the benefits of smart meters. 

As part of a partnership until the end of 2025, tens of thousands of households will be informed about how a smart meter – the new generation of gas and electricity meters rolled out across Great Britain – helps you to take control of your energy use. 

We’ve put together a list of 5 simple tips that could help you and your family save energy during these colder months… 

 

  1. Cook for everyone at once

If you have a busy household, make sure you’re catering for everyone, even for those watching TV in another room. Plus, it’s more sociable. 

Cooking up treats in a microwave or air fryer uses less energy than the oven, so why not give it a shot if you’ve got one? Search online for microwave and air fryer recipes. 

 

  1. Lower your combi boiler flow temperature to 60°C

Reducing your boiler flow temperature from 80°C to 60°C isn’t about making your house cooler; it’s about lowering the temperature of the water your boiler sends to the radiators in your home. 

This makes the boiler work more efficiently, meaning you use less energy to warm your home to the same temperature. 

 

  1. Only boil the water you need

When you’re sticking the kettle on, make sure you only boil the amount of water you need, rather than filling it up to the max. 

By not over-boiling, you could save on your energy bills.  

 

  1. Turn appliances off at the wall

You probably already know that switching appliances off at the plug saves energy. According to the Energy Saving Trust it could be £55 a year by simply remembering to turn your appliances off standby mode. 

Check the instructions for any appliances you aren’t sure about. Some satellite and digital TV recorders may need to be left plugged in so they can keep track of any programmes you want to record. 

 

  1. Ask your energy supplier for a smart meter

Getting a smart meter installed is a great way to monitor the energy you are consuming. The handy in-home display shows you how much you are spending in near-real time.

Smart Energy GB Extend Partnership With EFL Trust and EFL

The EFL and Smart Energy GB have agreed a two-year partnership extension which will see football supporters across England and Wales continue to receive help in understanding their energy spending.

Smart Energy GB teamed up with the EFL and EFL Trust in 2021 and has since held a series of engaging community focused activities showcasing the benefits smart meters can have for households.

 

With 72 EFL Clubs and their Club Community Organisations (CCOs) located in towns and cities across the country, the partnership provides a national platform with local reach to show fans how a smart meter and in-home display could help them better manage energy bills and household finances.

Smart meters are crucial to upgrading Britain’s energy system and by having them installed at home, football supporters will also play a key role in helping the transition to more environmentally friendly and sustainable energy sources, such as wind and solar. 

Ben Wright, the EFL’s Chief Commercial Officer, said:

“EFL Clubs and CCOs support their communities seven days a week, 365 days of the year and with Smart Energy GB focused on helping to tackle fuel poverty and making energy savings all year round, this will help, especially those who have been impacted by the cost-of-living crisis.

“We are pleased to announce this extension so we can continue to help support the communities our Clubs serve.”

“Working in partnership with EFL Clubs and their Club Community Organisations has been incredibly rewarding. The partnership has allowed Smart Energy GB to reach households through their love of football to understand how smart meters could help them better manage their energy bills. Cathy Abraham, the EFL Trust’s Chief Executive Officer, added:

“We know a lot of people are finding it harder to manage their household bills. Our EFL Club Community Organisations engage with over 840,000 people every year across England and Wales, so are perfectly placed to support those people who may be struggling.

“This partnership with Smart Energy GB will further help people to make informed decisions about the use of their energy.”

Trust opens new eco Family Zone

Families and staff celebrated the opening of Burton Albion Community Trust’s first eco Family Zone.

Taking place before Burton Albion’s recent home game against Forest Green Rovers, the area was awash with green endeavours as they hosted several family fun activities with an environmental focus.

The special event, held at the Burton Albion Community Football Centre, was at the end of the Great Big Green Week, the UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

Katie Johnson, School Sport Manager at Burton Albion Community Trust said:

“As we all know, now more than ever we have to look after the environment.

“We hope our eco Family Zone is the start of something big. Doing something no matter how big or small will go some way to help to save our environment.”

Among the activities and offer on the day were the regular family zone activities, such as football, archery and inflatable fun.

In addition, the Trust launched a Planet League Competition, a football-themed climate action tournament, and urged attendees to take part in a Layering Up challenge and bring their old football boots along because the site will become a Utilita Football Rebooted drop off point, to ensure they are rehomed and don’t end up in landfill.

Trust staff also promoted smart meters, as part of the EFL partnership with Smart Energy GB, the not-for-profit campaign helping everyone in Britain understand the importance of smart meters and their benefits to people and the environment.

Waste savvy staff were also on hand with some fun and games to show participants what waste can be disposed of where from their home and in the local community, and their Pedal To The Pitch initiative, where fans can chain their bikes up for free at the ground while fans enjoy the match.

The Family Zone takes place at the Burton Albion Community Football Centre every home matchday and commences 90 minutes before kick-off.
