NCS Teens Godsends for homeless charity

30 teenagers from Hull that have taken part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) with Tigers Trust have been labelled ‘godsends’ by a local homeless charity, Hull Homeless Community Project (HHCP).

NCS In Action

Among the numerous Social Action Projects carried out by participants on our National Citizen Service Programme (NCS) this summer, one particular group showed tremendous versatility in splitting their time between two important local causes.

The youngsters got their hands, feet and clothes dirty for a day of maintenance at the William Sutton Memorial Hall, a local community centre in St Budeaux, as they set about a day of painting, gardening and general graft.

It was then time to emulate our Olympic heroes with a fun run through Central Park, raising money and awareness for the Dash of Silver charity, an organisation dedicated to helping fight cancer in men.

As part of NCS, participants are required to carry out 30 hours of voluntary work in their Social Action project, a great way to end a programme that included residential stays, outdoor activities and fantastic life experiences.

Plymouth Argyle Community Trust have spaces on the NCS programme in October. To find out more, please contact the NCS team of Dwain Morgan and Ryan Yeoman on 01752 562561 ext.4 or email [email protected]  [email protected]

Teenagers Are Pushing Their Limits On NCS This Summer…. Spaces Still Available!

What are you doing this Summer? Over 6000 young people across England have already dedicated their summer to NCS with EFL Trust, but luckily there are still spaces available!

The 2-4 week programme is designed to help 16-17 year olds improve their confidence, learn new skills and discover how they can create real change in the community. Across the country teens have already started their NCS journey, challenging themselves through outdoor activities such as rock climbing and canoeing.

Jack Hinson, 16 from Sheffield who is currently on NCS with Sheffield Wednesday said; “I’ve only been at NCS for a week but I’ve already made so many new friends, we’re all really enjoying the opportunity of independent living and the outdoor activities like archery and gyhll scrambling have been amazing. This is definitely the best way for me to spend my summer, I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Each teenager will volunteer 30 hours of their time to the social action project, meaning over 180,000 hours’ worth of time dedicated to good causes in local communities.

Dominik Stingas Packzo, EFL Trust commented: “Summer is well underway and we’re seeing huge potential in this year’s teenagers. Everyone is getting along so well, they’re getting stuck into the challenges we’ve set them and they’ve been telling us they can’t wait to start learning about how to create their own social action projects.”

He continues: “There are still spaces available for teenagers in Yorkshire and Humber to sign up. It’s a chance to escape, take on new challenges and make new friends with people they wouldn’t usually get the opportunity to meet. Parents give such amazing feedback in the change of confidence they see in their teens, it really is an opportunity not to be missed!”

#IWill Football Clubs Support Youth Social Action

Football League Clubs across the country, through their community trusts are sharing their pledge of support to #iwill, the national campaign promoting youth social action.ncs-pic

This week the Community Trusts will be celebrating #iwill week, marking the 2nd anniversary of the #iwill campaign for youth social action and is calling on other organisations to join them. Through the Football League Trust the clubs have pledged to support this growing movement that aims to make involvement in social action part of life for more 10-20 year-olds around the UK. Youth social action is defined as ‘young people taking practical action in the service of others to create positive change’ and includes activities such as campaigning, fundraising and volunteering.

Football clubs have been very successful at engaging young people. For example around 40 Clubs deliver the Government’s National Citizen Service (NCS) which helps a young person’s transition to becoming adult by building confidence, teaching crucial life skills and getting then involved in projects that make a difference to their community. This year over 8,000 15-17 year olds, on NCS with Football League Clubs, have taken part in over 200,000 hours of social action projects to improve their communities.

2015 Cabinet Office research produced compelling evidence that young people who take part in social action develop key character and employability skills. It follows on from this that involvement creates a double-benefit, strengthening communities and enhancing the skills of young participants.

Charlotte Hill, CEO of the charity running the #iwill campaign says: “We are delighted that The Football Clubs have pledged to support our work, and is sharing their progress during #iwill week to inspire others to take part also. If we are to make involvement in social action the norm for 10-20 year-olds we need partners to commit to tangible actions just as they are doing. The involvement of the Football League Trust will undoubtedly help us progress towards our goal.’

Working with business, education and voluntary sector partners, the campaign aims to ensure that all young people can access social action opportunities, whatever their background. The #iwill goal is to raise by 50% the number of 10-20 year-olds taking part in social action by 2020, which will mean an additional 1.5 million young people will be active in their communities.

This summer more than 8,000 young people aged 15-17 are taking part on the adventure of a lifetime with the Football League Trust.

The National Citizen Service (NCS) programme delivered by the Football League Trust and partners brings together 15–17 year olds from different backgrounds in a packed programme of challenge, service and learning, enabling them to develop the confidence, skills and attitudes they need to become more engaged with their communities and to become active and responsible citizens.

NCS is keeping thousands of young people busy this summer with a three to four week programme, testing them in the first week with outdoor activities such as kayaking, ghyll ccrambling, rock climbing and many more.  The remaining weeks are spent engaging with the local community, learning new skills, and finally planning and delivering a community project that will leave a legacy in the local community.

Since the pilot year in 2011, the Football League Trust scheme has delivered more than 200,000 hours of community work that have benefited and made a positive impact on the local community.

Here’s what some young people that are away on NCS have said through social media.

NCS is delivered during autumn, spring and summer in which young people nationwide can sign up for this fantastic opportunity for just £50. If you want to say Yes to NCS then please contact The Football League Trust at [email protected] or visit www.ncsflt.co.uk.
