We support the early detection of prostate cancer by encouraging men to talk to their GP.
There are four major risk factors that can influence your risk for developing prostate cancer. Prevention can hinge on awareness and the right screening — neither too early, nor too late.
It’s important to understand your personal risk profile;
- Age –men are diagnosed in their 50s and even 40s but in the UK more men are diagnosed between the ages of 65 and 69 than any other age bracket.
- Race – men of African-Caribbean origin are especially at risk, are 70% more likely to develop prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from it.
- Diet and lifestyle – High-fat, highly processed carbohydrate diets can increase risk. Obese men also take longer to recover from surgery and their risk of dying from prostate cancer can be higher.
- Family History and genetic factors – Cancer Research UK estimates that inherited factors explain between 5% and 9% of prostate cancers.
Support is available. Tackle Prostate Cancer has produced a series of information booklets. They also have a national network of support groups.
