Kickstart programme provides permanent job role at Mansfield Town Football in the Community

It’s been a tough 18 months for coaches across the country, as the global pandemic shut down the majority of activities. Getting a job during this time also proved to be challenging. This was proved by Ruth Oldham, an aspiring sports coach.

Before applying for the Kickstart programme, Ruth studied at college in Nottingham completing her BTEC level 2 in sport, which also helped complete her FA Level 1 coaching qualification. Ruth stumbled across the Kickstart opening at the job centre and immediately applied for it. Ruth had high expectations for the role.

As the pandemic restrictions lifted, Ruth was able to get the coaching experience she was after. She has been working on various projects at Mansfield Town Football in the Community, such as the Summer Holiday Club programme as well as doing PL Kicks and Wildcats sessions. Working with other experienced coaches, Ruth was able to develop her skillset within the club.

After spending her time over the summer holidays at the club, Ruth has been offered a full-time position for her fantastic work and rapport with young people.

Ruth offers some advice to young adults who are debating whether to apply for roles through the Kickstart programme.

“It’s a good way to get into coaching and other jobs in Football Clubs. It’s your opportunity. You get 6 months great experience and find out if you like a role, but with no pressure at the end of it.

“I am delighted to be joining Mansfield Town in the Community, as the role suited me perfectly.”
