Inspirational young group from Brathay Trust raise nearly £1,000 with NCS for the National Autistic Society

A young group from Brathay Trust which compromised of 13 members, raised around £1,000 for the National Autistic Society, as they chose to spread awareness about Autism for their summer social action project with NCS.

To conclude their time on NCS, the group banded together to work on a social action project of their choosing, to help improve their communities. From the onset, the group demonstrated a passion towards spreading awareness for autism.

The team felt that this was a matter close to home, as family members of the team and the team members themselves, have been affected by a lack of understanding and misrepresentation within society regarding autism. Therefore, the group were highly passionate about the project.

Initially, the group decided upon launching a GoFundMe page, which was titled, “NCS 4 NAS”. The motive behind the page was to raise money for the National Autistic Society, raising awareness by ensuring that everyone on the autistic spectrum is understood within society.

The team got involved in an extensive variety of activities. Notably, each team member completed 10,000 steps on a sponsored walk, encouraging a healthy lifestyle, particularly for young individuals.

Additionally, the group also got out and about in Halifax Town Centre to undertake a tombola and raffle, all with the goal of raising money and awareness. The team were pushed out of their comfort zones, as they spoke to members of the public, selling raffle tickets and spreading awareness of autism. With an initial target of raising £500, the group smashed their objective, as they nearly doubled their goal.

After raising £944, the group have greatly benefited the National Autistic Society, as the money will help them provide extra support and provisions for individuals who need it.

The group also benefitted from their summer social action project with NCS themselves. One member of the group spoke fondly of their experience:

“It’s been a great experience meeting new people and also having the opportunity to do things you wouldn’t be able to do at home”.

Another member of the group said:

“During NCS, completing our social action project was a gift, and it was amazing to meet the whole team and also see their passion for making change”.

With the group acquiring new confidence, through their new experiences with their new friends, this young group has no boundaries on demonstrating their capabilities from now onwards.
